Where is Furneaux Distillery located?

Furneaux Distillery is located on Flinders Island, part of Tasmania’s remote Furneaux Group. Our distillery sits on a working farm overlooking Bass Strait, surrounded by clean air and rugged island beauty.

What makes Furneaux whisky special?

Furneaux whisky is made entirely on Flinders Island from Tasmanian barley and pure island water, distilled in copper pot stills and aged in premium oak casks to reflect the island’s wild coastal character.

Is Furneaux whisky made in Tasmania?

Yes. Furneaux is a Tasmanian single malt whisky, crafted and matured entirely on Flinders Island, making it one of the few true island whiskies in Australia.

Who makes Furneaux whisky?

Furneaux whisky is handcrafted by our small team on Flinders Island at the Furneaux Farm, where we grow, malt, distil, and mature everything on site.

Visiting the Distillery

Can I visit Furneaux Distillery?

Yes, you can visit our cellar door on Flinders Island to taste our single malt whiskies, enjoy a guided tasting, and learn about island distilling. The distillery is located at the Furneaux Farm, 1 Sawyers Bay Rd, Emita, Tasmania, 7255. Approximately a 15min drive north of the main town and airport location, Whitemark.

Do you offer whisky tastings or tours?

We offer guided tastings and private distillery tours by appointment, where visitors can explore our stillhouse and sample limited releases.

How do I get to Furneaux Distillery on Flinders Island?

You can reach Flinders Island by plane from Melbourne, Launceston, or Hobart. Once on the island, Furneaux Distillery is just a short drive from Whitemark. The main airlines are Sharp Airlines operating out of Essendon Airport and Launceston Airport, and Flinders Island Aviation operating out of Bridport. There are also independent charter companies such as Flinders Island Air Charters or Yarra Valley Aviation who offer charter flights out of Victoria and Tasmania.

If you want to bring your vehicle, you can travel by sea from Bridport, Tasmania with Bass Strait Freight. Contact them for sailing schedules and rates.

Where can I buy Furneaux whisky?

You can purchase Furneaux whisky from our online shop, at our cellar door, or through select retailers and venues across Australia.

Do you make peated whisky?

Yes, our Flinders Island Peated Single Malt uses local, coastal peat from our island to create a smoky, maritime flavour that reflects the island’s rugged environment.

Are all Furneaux whiskies single malt?

Yes. Every release from Furneaux Distillery is a true Tasmanian single malt — 100% malted barley, double-distilled, and matured on Flinders Island.

Do you make other spirits besides whisky?

We make a multi gold medal winning gin - Untamed Gin. Additionally, we often release limited island spirits under our Expedition Series, and new-make spirit for collectors and whisky enthusiasts, available through our shop or at the cellar door.

Sustainability and Island Impact

How is Furneaux Distillery sustainable?

We operate on a circular economy model — growing and malting our own grain, recycling by-products on the farm, and reducing transport emissions through local production. The ample roof of our stillhouse is lined with solar panels, all process and drinking water comes from 450kL of rainwater catchment. Pot ale and lees are treated and used for irrigation, spent grain is sent to local farmers as pig feed, and used by Biosecurity as feral species bait.

What is the Furneaux Malthouse project?

Currently under design, the Furneaux Malthouse will allow us to malt our crops right here on Flinders Island, creating jobs and ensuring our whisky is 100% island-made.

Do you work with local farmers?

Yes. We collaborate with Flinders Island farmers to grow and source grain for malting, supporting local agriculture and strengthening the island’s economy.

Do you ship whisky across Australia?

Yes, we ship securely across Australia in protective packaging. Orders are dispatched promptly from Flinders Island or our mainland partners.

Do you ship whisky internationally?

Currently we only ship within Australia, but international delivery options are being developed.
